Ingredients:
4 small onions (about 2-3 inches in diameter)
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1/2 teaspoon paprika
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon onion powder
1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
2 large eggs
1 cup buttermilk
Cooking spray
For the Dipping Sauce:
Equipment:
Air fryer
Mixing bowls
Measuring cups and spoons
Knife and cutting board
Whisk
Small bowl
Spoon
Instructions:
Prepare the Onions:
Peel the onions and cut off the top (stem end), leaving the root end intact.
Place the onion cut-side down and make cuts downward, stopping about 1/2 inch from the root. Make 12-16 cuts around the onion, depending on its size, to create the “petals.” Be careful not to cut all the way through.
Preheat the Air Fryer:
Preheat your air fryer to 350°F (175°C).
Prepare the Breading:
In a mixing bowl, combine 1 cup of all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon of salt, 1/2 teaspoon of black pepper, 1/2 teaspoon of paprika, 1/2 teaspoon of garlic powder, 1/2 teaspoon of onion powder, and 1/2 teaspoon of dried oregano.
In another mixing bowl, whisk together 2 large eggs and 1 cup of buttermilk.
Bread the Onions:
Dip each onion into the flour mixture, making sure to get the flour into all the “petals.”
Shake off any excess flour.
Dip the floured onion into the egg mixture, ensuring it is well coated.
Finally, dip the onion back into the flour mixture for a second coating. Make sure the onion is fully coated.
Air Fry the Onions:
Place the coated onions in the air fryer basket, cut-side up. Depending on the size of your air fryer, you may need to do this in batches.
Spray the onions lightly with cooking spray.
Air fry at 350°F (175°C) for 15-20 minutes, until the onions are golden brown and crispy.
Prepare the Dipping Sauce:
In a small bowl, combine 1/2 cup of mayonnaise, 2 tablespoons of ketchup, 1 tablespoon of horseradish sauce, 1/2 teaspoon of paprika, 1/2 teaspoon of garlic powder, and 1/2 teaspoon of Worcestershire sauce.
Mix well and season with salt and pepper to taste.
Serve:
Carefully remove the blooming onions from the air fryer and transfer to a serving platter.
Serve immediately with the dipping sauce on the side.
